Channel Opt-In URL Tokens: Activate for WhatsApp and Messenger

Use opt-in tokens to invite candidates who have not yet opted in to connect on WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.

Written by Melo

Candidates often enter Talkpush through channels other than WhatsApp or Messenger, such as a job board, a career page, or a referral. Until they opt in, recruiters cannot reach them on those messaging channels. Talkpush provides two message tokens that let you invite these candidates to connect. Each token is added to a message template and sent to the candidate, and each activates one channel.

Activate WhatsApp with Channel Opt-In URL

How it works

The token generates a short Talkpush link that opens a WhatsApp-specific opt-in page. The page displays the candidate's phone number, pre-filled from their application, along with a Send me alerts on WhatsApp checkbox.

When the candidate submits the form, Talkpush saves their phone number and records their WhatsApp opt-in. If the application is still pending, the campaign's WhatsApp invitation template is sent automatically. The candidate is then redirected to WhatsApp with a START message already entered.

Requirements

  • WhatsApp must be configured for your company. Follow this guide to set it up.

Activation steps

  1. Open or create a message template and add {{channel_optin_url}} where you want the link to appear.

  2. Save the template.

  3. Send the message to the candidates you want to activate.

  4. Ask candidates to open the link, submit the form, and send the pre-filled START message.

Notes:

  • If the candidate has already opted in, the link bypasses the form and opens WhatsApp directly.

  • The link expires after two weeks. If it has expired, send a new message containing the token.

  • This token activates WhatsApp only and cannot be used for Messenger.

Activate Messenger with Messenger Interview Link

How it works

The token generates a link to your company's Facebook Page in Messenger, carrying the candidate's application reference. Facebook does not allow businesses to initiate Messenger conversations, so the candidate must open the link and start the chat themselves by tapping Get Started. Once they do, Talkpush's Messenger bot links the conversation to their application, completes any missing name, email, or phone details from the application, and resumes the interview from where it stopped.

Requirements

  • The Messenger bot must be enabled.

  • At least one Facebook Page must be active.

If either condition is not met, the token returns blank and no link appears in the message.

Activation steps

  1. Open or create a message template and add {{messenger_interview_link}} where you want the link to appear.

  2. Save the template.

  3. Send the message to the candidates you want to activate.

  4. Ask candidates to open the link and tap Get Started.

Facebook Page selection

If your company has more than one active Facebook Page and the campaign does not have a specific page assigned, the link uses the company's first active page, which may not be the intended one. To avoid this, assign a Facebook Page to the campaign.

Tip: Ask candidates to tap Get Started rather than typing a message. When a first-time user types a message instead, Facebook may not pass the application reference to Talkpush, and the conversation will not be linked to the application. If this happens, resend the link.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Resolution

The Messenger link is blank

Confirm that the Messenger bot is enabled and that your company has an active Facebook Page.

The link opens the wrong Facebook Page

Assign the intended Facebook Page to the campaign, then resend the message.

The candidate messaged you, but the conversation is not linked to their application

The candidate likely typed a message instead of tapping Get Started. Resend the link and ask them to tap Get Started.

The WhatsApp link no longer works

The link has expired. Send a new message with the token.

The candidate did not see the WhatsApp form

They have already opted in, so the link opened WhatsApp directly.
