SMS Usage Guidelines

Written by Crismin Joy Lagamayo

To ensure SMS messages are successfully delivered and remain compliant with local carrier and vendor requirements, please follow the guidelines below:

Avoid Mentioning Brands or Company Names

  • Do not include brand or company names in your SMS content — especially international brands.

  • If an international brand is detected in the message body, the vendor will classify the number as international, which blocks message delivery.

Short, Clear Messages Win

  • Keep messages short and clear — the shorter the text, the lower the risk of triggering concatenation. One complete message uses 160 characters.

  • Avoid sending too many messages in short bursts to the same user to prevent being flagged as spam by local carriers.

  • Avoid long messages that result in concatenation — some operators allow only up to 3 message parts for a long SMS.

Avoid Emojis and URLs/Links

  • Do not include emojis or non-standard characters. Emojis use Unicode (16 bits per character), which reduces the total character limit (≈70 per SMS) and increases message segmentation, negatively impacting deliverability and open rates.

  • Do not include Links or URLs unless they are whitelisted by the messaging carrier to avoid link-based blocking.

Use Basic Characters and avoid using Special Symbols/Characters

  • Use the following characters to maximize the character limit (≈approximately 160 per SMS) and ensure compatibility and deliverability across networks. Avoid using special characters outside of this list.

Basic Characters (1 character each)

  • Uppercase letters: A–Z

  • Lowercase letters: a–z

  • Digits: 0–9

  • Punctuation & symbols: These take two character slots

  • ! " # ¤ % & ' ( ) * + , - . /

  • : ; < = > ? ¡

  • SP (space), LF (line feed) and CR (carriage return)
