Conditional Logic lets you show or hide a question — or an entire question set — based on how a candidate answered an earlier question. Instead of asking every candidate every question, your screening flow adapts as they go, skipping anything that no longer applies.
It works everywhere candidates answer questions: the new career pages, the classic landing page, and every chatbot channel, including WhatsApp, Messenger, SMS, and voice.
What It Does
Every row in your screening flow — an individual question or a full question set — can carry a rule: “Only show this question if…” Rules read a candidate's answer to an earlier multiple-choice or dropdown question. A question can never depend on itself, on something asked later in the flow, or on a free-text answer.
Each rule is built from one of three conditions:
Equals | Shows the question only when the candidate's answer matches the option you pick. |
Does not equal | Shows the question only when the candidate's answer is anything other than the option you pick. |
Is answered | Shows the question as soon as the source question has any answer at all. |
You can add more than one condition to a single rule and choose how they combine: Match All requires every condition to hold, while Match Any requires just one. Put a rule on a question set instead of a single question, and it gates the whole block — the set only appears if the rule's condition is met.
Note: Half-finished rules are never saved. Remove the last condition on a question, and it goes back to being always-asked.
Shortening the flow for each candidate: questions that don't apply never appear, so candidates spend less time on the form.
Keeping shortlisting fair: auto-shortlist and auto-reject only ever judge candidates on questions they were actually asked.
Working the same way everywhere: the same rule applies on career pages, the landing page, and every chatbot and voice channel.
Protecting in-progress edits: rule changes are staged with the rest of the flow and only go live when you click Save.
How It Looks for The Candidate
They only ever see questions that apply to them. As they answer, the form quietly adjusts — instantly, with no reload, on the career pages and the classic landing page; and simply skipped, with no message at all, on WhatsApp, Messenger, SMS, and voice.
How It Looks In Talkpush
Go to Campaign Settings > Questions and open the row for the question or question set you want to gate.
Click Add Rule to open the rule editor.
Choose the source question, a condition — Equals, Does not equal, or Is answered — and, if needed, the answer to match.
Add more conditions if needed, then choose Match All or Match Any.
Click Save. A green Conditional badge appears on the row so you can spot gated questions at a glance.
Important: Rules can only combine conditions with a single Match All or Match Any choice. Nested condition groups — for example, mixing “any of A or B” with a separate “all of C and D” — aren't supported. Keep complex logic to a single group. |
Learn more:
Q: What happens if I reorder questions while a candidate is mid-application? A: The candidate keeps seeing the order they started with. The new order applies to candidates who haven't started yet.
Q: Can I make a whole question set conditional? A: Yes. Adding a rule to a question set gates the entire set — the whole group only appears if the rule's condition is met.
Q: Does a hidden question count toward the candidate's completion percentage? A: No. Completion is calculated only over questions the candidate was actually asked.
Q: What happens if two question sets contain the same question? A: Talkpush asks it once. Duplicate protection locks any question already in the flow, whether it was added individually or through another set. |
