Multi Select is a question type that lets candidates tick more than one option, instead of being limited to a single choice. It's available everywhere questions live: CRM templates, campaign flows, the careers apply page, the EOS landing page, chat bots, and the AI interview agent. It's a good fit whenever an answer isn't a single fact — like asking which shifts a candidate can work, or which certifications they hold.
What It Does
Multi Select works like Multiple Choice, but candidates can tick as many options as apply. Add options the same way you would for Multiple Choice — the candidate's selections are stored together, joined by a comma (for example, "Finance, IT").
Note: Creating or editing question templates requires Owner access to the Templates tab.
A Data Map is available, so the combined selections can flow straight into a candidate attribute. A Timer can also be set, the same as on other question types.
Multi Select questions can also drive conditional logic. When building a condition, choose the operator Includes or Does not include to check whether a candidate's selections contain a specific option. Multiple Choice, Dropdown, and Multi Select are the only question types that can be used as a condition source.
Wherever questions appear — the campaign flow, the Add Questions modal, or the Question Sets editor — a Multi Select question shows a checked-box icon and the label Multi Select.
Why it helps
Capturing multiple answers in one question — no need for a separate question per option.
Feeding conditional logic — use Includes / Does not include to route candidates based on what they select.
Keeping data clean — selections map to a candidate attribute automatically, in the order the options were written.
How It Looks for the Candidate
Careers page and landing page
A Multi Select question shows as a list of checkboxes, in the order you wrote the options. Candidates must tick at least one option before they can click Continue.
Chat (WhatsApp, SMS, Messenger)
The question is sent as a numbered list, with instructions to reply with the numbers of every option that applies, separated by commas (for example, "1, 3"). Candidates can also type the option names instead of numbers. If a reply doesn't match at least one option, the candidate is asked again.
AI interview agent
The AI interview agent accepts a natural reply (for example, "finance and tech") and matches it to the closest options on file, letting the candidate know more than one answer is expected.
Note: A Multi Select question left unanswered when its timer expires is submitted as "Not answered within time limit," the same as other question types.
How It Looks in Talkpush
Go to Campaign Settings > Questions inside the campaign.
Click Add Question.
Select Multi Select from the Question Type dropdown and add the options candidates can choose from.
Turn on Data Map and choose a candidate attribute, if you want the selections to flow into one.
Click Save to use it for this campaign only, or Save as Template to add it to the shared Question Template Library.
Note: The same setup is available from the Question Template Library (Templates > Questions) — it's the same question editor, just reached from a different tab.
Q: Can a candidate change their answer after submitting? A: No — once a Multi Select question is submitted, the recorded selections don't change unless the candidate retakes the interview.
Q: Does editing an option's wording affect past answers? A: No. As with Multiple Choice, editing an option's text doesn't rewrite answers candidates already submitted. |
